Breaking bread together
Do everything in love. I Cor. 16:14
This week we started something new and now I’m wondering why it took so long to do something like this. On Monday we invited 2 of our Monday route clients out to dinner. What a wonderful time we had sharing a meal, growing our friendship and finding out more about their journey with Christ. A little over 4 years ago we met Sally standing on a street corner trying to hustle money for food. She had grown up on the street where she was standing but because of hard times and physical/emotional challenges she was now squatting in a vacant home. The lady we shared a meal with on Monday was a new creation. We’ve prayed with her, laughed with her, celebrated with her when she got a place to live, and cried with joy when she started going to church. On Monday evening she practically started preaching to us! God is so very, very good. Her brother Tony also joined us for the dinner. We met her brother about 3 years ago when Sally moved away from our outreach route. He would drive her down to meet us every week. At first he wouldn’t get out of the car, then he would get out say hi and get back in the car. Now he prays with us, swaps sports stories with the guys on the team and on Monday he shared a little about having been in Vietnam. Love was abounding at the dinner table on Monday!
On Tuesday we invited a couple that have a special place in our hearts. We met them at different times and in different circumstances. We met Michelle first about 5 years ago when she was one of the ‘Ladies of the evening’. We would see her almost every week on the streets then she told us where she was squatting and we would stop by there if we didn’t see her on the street. We met Richard about a year later. He was dating one of the women we knew on the street and she invited us to stop by and meet him. Shortly after meeting Richard he and the girl we knew split up. A few months later we stopped by to visit with him and Michelle was there. These 2 have been full of wonderful surprises. Michelle is no longer on the streets, she has been working slowly but steadily towards sobriety and Richard has been a very positive influence in her life. At dinner they shared a little more about their temptations and stumbling blocks in their journey to know and trust Christ.
These last 2 evenings were so refreshing. We thank God we had the opportunity to sit down and talk with our clients in a more relaxed and private setting. We had time to ask questions without their fearing that those around them at the van would overhear their struggles and prayer requests. Thank you Jesus that you always provide a way for us to love more deeply and personally with your precious children.
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, Romans 14:17
Blessings,
Donna
