Fear and trembling
And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling. 2 Cor. 7:15
“Oh no we just passed up W and he’s running after the van”, was the cry in the van. So I rolled down my window and yelled that we would turn around and come back. It was so cold out and he was sitting up against the abutment with his little sign begging for food. So we turned the corner and there he was he had run over to the other side of the street, so we passed a few lunch bags and a fleece poncho out the window to him. “Thank you, I love you”, he cried out. It was a busy intersection so we couldn’t get out and pray with him but our hearts filled with joy to see him. I know we shouldn’t have favorites but I think all of us on the team have a deep love for this man.
We continued on our route thankfully seeing very few people, it was too cold to be out walking the streets and we couldn’t visit some of our friends because the streets were impassable. So we decided to go back and see W and give him some more lunch bags, some socks and a few blankets. God is so good for some odd reason I had a large trash bag in the van and we were able to put the items in the bag and give it to W. He was delighted to receive the items and the bag as he would have to carry everything to his abandominium. Off we go again looking for more people. Found a few more friends standing on the street corners and loaded them up with lunch bags and ponchos. It’s time to head home and we pass W again and he calls out again, “God bless you, I love you”. Now I’m not sure who thought of it but we all agreed, let’s go back to Tim Horton’s and buy W some hot soup and coffee. I don’t know who was more excited; the team to bless W with hot food or W to receive it but when we got back to where he was the look on his face was pure joy. The good Lord was shining on all of us as I had the opportunity to sit in this intersection and there were NO cars around. W mentioned that now he could go back to his abandominium. He said that he was out there working for a few dollars to buy some hot food, but now he had the challenge of how to carry everything we had given him back to his place, we all agreed to ask him into the van and we would drive him to his squat. He climbed into the van but the look on his face was pure fear and he never stopped trembling. It broke our hearts to see him looking so scared but it made me think of how we treat the Lord with that same fear at times. We like that we can call on the Lord in times of need but then putting our trust in Him to take us where we need to go is another matter. Thank you Jesus that you always show us our weaknesses when we trust you to lead us into unfamiliar territory.
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Phil. 2:12,13
